One of the best things about working at a library, and in my case, the Toy Library, is the diversity of the people that come through our doors. When we are out in the “real world”, going about our daily lives, we are viewed in a certain way, whether it’s by our appearance, occupation, etcetera. However, once you step through that door, you are just like everyone else. People that may never meet find common ground in this setting. At the Toy Library, we have children of various ages and backgrounds who find their common ground in their love of play. They get to see new faces, even ones that live near them that they never knew were there. Parents get to pick out different toys and expose their children to things, no matter how simple, that they may not have tried before.
It seems so simple, playing with a toy. Yet, for a child, coming into a place like the Toy Library gives them the opportunity to try things they may not otherwise see, meet new friends or see old ones. No matter where they come from, they all want the same thing…to have fun. I have met such a great diversity of people while I’ve been here, and am constantly in awe of the warmth of our families. We have a lot of regulars, but always love to see new faces. It’s a great feeling to be able to help someone, especially a child, to feel welcome, by the simple gesture of showing them a new toy. I guess we are a little like Santa’s Elves in that way.
Parents also get to exchange ideas and get advice, not only from us, but from other parents, on the large variety of toys that we offer. Whether it’s stimulating the imagination with one of our playhouses, aiding a budding musician with a musical toy or helping a little one discover colours and shapes, there is something for everyone.

So, if you know of someone who is new to our neighbourhood, or you are just looking for something to keep the kids entertained, send them over. We have great staff at McCormick and would love to see you!
